The strawberry picking season in Beijing is generally from December to May of the following year, and the specific time is affected by factors such as greenhouse planting techniques, variety differences, climate conditions, picking garden management, and market demand.
In winter, the temperature in Beijing is relatively low, making it difficult for strawberries grown outdoors to survive. Most picking gardens use greenhouse planting techniques to regulate temperature and humidity, and harvesting can begin as early as December. Early maturing varieties such as Hongyan and Zhangji are usually available from December to February, with high sweetness and storage tolerance. During the Spring Festival, the market demand is strong, and some picking gardens will be launched in advance through methods such as supplementary lighting and heating. After March, as the temperature rises and the temperature difference between day and night increases, the accumulation of sugar in strawberries becomes more abundant, and the taste reaches its optimal state. In a few high-altitude mountainous areas or picking gardens that use special cultivation techniques, the ripening period of strawberries may be delayed until April to May. Late maturing varieties such as Sweet Charlie and Snow White are more suitable for spring picking, with larger fruit size and balanced acidity. Some parks will achieve staggered supply of different varieties through crop rotation planting. After late May, due to high temperatures, the quality of strawberries will decline, and most of the picking season will end.
When selecting strawberries for picking, it is recommended to contact the park in advance to confirm the variety and maturity. Different varieties have significant differences in sweetness, hardness, and flavor. Wear comfortable clothing and non slip shoes during harvesting to avoid stepping on the plants. Fresh strawberries are rich in vitamin C and anthocyanins, but their skin is delicate and easily damaged. It is recommended to store them in a breathable container and refrigerate them as soon as possible. People who are allergic to strawberries should consume them with caution, and those with weaker gastrointestinal function should avoid overeating on an empty stomach.
