What does oat bran look like

Oat bran is the outer layer peeled off during the oat processing, which appears as light yellow to brown flakes or powder, with a rough and dry texture and a distinct grainy texture.

Oat bran retains the outermost seed coat and aleurone layer of oats, presenting an irregular fragmented appearance with fibrous texture on the edges of thin flakes. The oat bran that has not been finely ground shows obvious oat shell fragments with uneven particle size, and has a hard texture when dry. Due to its high content of dietary fiber, it will swell and soften upon absorbing water, and its color will deepen to dark brown, forming a viscous texture after brewing.

Fine processed oat bran often appears as a uniform powder, with light color and fine particles, but still retains a slight roughness. Some products may have a light caramel color due to baking techniques, but black burnt particles should not appear. High quality oat bran has a light wheat aroma, but if it becomes moldy or spoiled, it will produce a rancid taste and have severe clumping.

It is recommended to choose oat bran with complete packaging and no impurities or odors. After opening, it should be sealed and stored against moisture. It can be eaten with yogurt or Congee, and the daily intake should be controlled at 20-30g. People with weak gastrointestinal function should start to adapt from a small dose. If the color turns black or the taste is abnormal, stop eating immediately.
