What can baking soda be used for

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, has various uses such as cleaning, deodorizing, baking, and relieving acid reflux. The main functions of baking soda include neutralizing acidic substances, mild stain removal, food bloating, relieving heartburn, skin care, etc.

1. Neutralizing acidic substances

Baking soda, as a weak alkaline substance, can neutralize stomach acid and relieve heartburn. When using, follow the doctor's advice to control the dosage. Its aqueous solution can balance the acidity and alkalinity of swimming pools, and is often used as an environmentally friendly neutralizing agent when treating acidic wastewater. However, high concentration use may irritate the mucosa, and direct contact with the eyes or wounds should be avoided.

2. Gentle Decontamination

Baking soda particles have mild grinding properties and can remove burnt stains from cookware without damaging the surface. The bubbles generated by the reaction with white vinegar can clear the drainage pipe, and their adsorption characteristics can eliminate refrigerator odors. When cleaning carpets, spreading and then vacuuming can effectively remove pet odors and beverage stains.

3. Loose Food

During baking, carbon dioxide is produced through thermal decomposition, causing the cake and bread to expand in volume and become soft in texture. It needs to be used in combination with acidic ingredients such as yogurt or lemon juice, as using it alone may result in residual alkaline taste. Adding deep-fried dough sticks can make the dough crisper, but excess will affect the nutritional value of the ingredients.

Fourth, relieve heartburn

Temporary excessive stomach acid can be relieved by taking a small amount of baking soda water, but long-term use may cause alkalosis or increased rebound gastric acid secretion. Use with caution in patients with renal insufficiency, as it may worsen edema symptoms. Taking certain medications together can affect absorption efficiency and requires an interval of at least two hours.

5. Skin Care

Diluted and applied can relieve itching caused by mosquito bites, and adding it during bathing can soften keratin. Overuse can damage the skin barrier and cause dryness, and sensitive skin should avoid frequent use. Mixing with coconut oil can make a natural exfoliating cream, but it is recommended to choose a professional product for facial care as it is safer.

When using baking soda, attention should be paid to concentration control. For cleaning purposes, it is recommended to use a 1-2% aqueous solution. Food additives should be added according to the recipe ratio. When stored, it needs to be sealed and moisture-proof. Even after clumping, it can still be used but the effect is weakened. Special populations such as pregnant women, infants, and patients with chronic diseases should consult professionals before use to avoid long-term contact with aluminum containing products and prevent chemical reactions. Daily use can replace some chemical cleaning agents to achieve environmentally friendly home care.
