Moxibustion for weight loss requires attention to controlling temperature and time, selecting appropriate acupoints, avoiding moxibustion on an empty stomach, maintaining skin integrity, and identifying physical constitution. Moxibustion can be used as an auxiliary weight loss method, but it needs to be adjusted in conjunction with diet and exercise.

1. Temperature and Time
When applying moxibustion, the temperature should be kept within the tolerable range of the skin, usually warm and without burning sensation, and the duration of a single moxibustion should not exceed 30 minutes. Excessive temperature or prolonged time may cause local burns and the appearance of erythema and blisters. The first attempt can be shortened to 15 minutes, and gradually extended after adaptation. During the moxibustion process, it is necessary to observe skin reactions at all times. If there is a significant burning sensation, stop immediately.
2. Acupoint Selection
Common weight loss acupoints include Zhongwan acupoint, Guanyuan acupoint, Zusanli acupoint, etc. It is recommended to have a professional physician guide the positioning. Self application of moxibustion can easily affect its effectiveness due to inaccurate positioning, and incorrect stimulation may also cause discomfort. Moxibustion on abdominal acupoints should avoid the navel, and assistance from others is recommended for back acupoints. Patients with diabetes and those with abnormal skin sensation should carefully select acupoints.
3. Fasting taboos
When blood sugar is low in a hungry state, moxibustion can accelerate energy expenditure and may cause dizziness and fatigue. It is recommended to do it 1-2 hours after meals to avoid moxibustion before breakfast or after not eating for a long time. Individuals with low blood sugar constitution can supplement carbohydrates in moderation before moxibustion, and prepare sugary foods during the moxibustion process. It is also not advisable to immediately apply moxibustion after excessive fatigue or drunkenness.

4. Skin Protection
The skin at the moxibustion site should be intact and undamaged. Patients with skin diseases such as dermatitis and eczema should postpone treatment. Ash falling from mugwort can easily cause burns, and can be isolated using anti scald nets. Avoid contact with water within 24 hours after moxibustion to prevent pore opening and infection. People with scar constitution may experience pigmentation, and it is recommended to conduct small-scale testing first. Continuous redness and swelling after moxibustion require cold compress treatment.
5. Physical Fitness
Patients with yin deficiency and excessive fire may exhibit symptoms such as dry mouth and tongue, insomnia, and excessive sweating. Excessive moxibustion may exacerbate internal dryness and heat. Pregnant women, women during menstruation, and patients with high fever are prohibited from using moxibustion for weight loss. It is recommended to conduct traditional Chinese medicine constitution identification before moxibustion, and for those with damp heat constitution, cupping therapy can be used to enhance the effect. During moxibustion, if discomfort such as palpitations and shortness of breath occurs, it should be immediately discontinued. Moxibustion for weight loss requires long-term persistence, and it is recommended to do 3-4 times a week in conjunction with aerobic exercise. Reasonably control daily calorie intake, increase high-quality protein and dietary fiber intake. Excessive reliance on moxibustion may lead to muscle loss, and it is recommended to monitor the weight loss effect through body fat percentage. Drink water appropriately before and after moxibustion to promote metabolism, and avoid immediate bathing or blowing. If there is no continuous change in weight or abnormal symptoms, it is necessary to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in a timely manner to adjust the plan.
