Hot compress medication for weight loss may cause health risks such as skin burns, allergic reactions, liver and kidney damage, electrolyte imbalances, and dependence.

1. Skin burns
Excessive temperature or prolonged application time of the medication in hot compress can cause skin redness, blistering, and even deep burns. Some traditional Chinese medicine ingredients such as dried ginger and Sichuan peppercorns are irritating and may worsen skin damage under high temperatures. Skin burns may result in pigmentation or scar hyperplasia, which can affect aesthetics. If combined with infection, there may be local redness, swelling, heat pain, and even systemic fever.
2. Allergic reactions
Plant components such as Artemisia argyi and Angelica dahurica in traditional Chinese medicine packs may induce contact dermatitis, manifested as itching and rash at the application site. Some people may have specific allergic reactions to certain traditional Chinese medicine ingredients, which may cause urticaria or anaphylactic shock. People with allergies have a higher risk, and in severe cases, they may experience critical symptoms such as difficulty breathing and laryngeal edema.
3. Liver and kidney injury
Some traditional Chinese medicine ingredients with laxative or diuretic effects, such as rhubarb and senna leaves, may be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Long term use may increase the metabolic burden on the liver and kidneys, leading to elevated transaminase levels or abnormal kidney function. Early liver and kidney damage may have no obvious symptoms, but in severe cases, symptoms such as jaundice and edema may occur.

4. Electrolyte imbalance
Some weight loss pills contain potent diuretic ingredients such as Poria cocos and Alisma, which may cause the loss of electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. Electrolyte imbalance can manifest as fatigue, palpitations, muscle spasms, and other symptoms that can trigger arrhythmia when severe. Elderly people or patients with cardiovascular disease have a higher risk.
5. Dependence
Repeated use of hot compress packs may lead to psychological dependence, and some users may experience weight rebound after discontinuation. Some products containing neuroinhibitory ingredients may lead to addictive dependence. Long term use may interfere with normal endocrine function and affect the recovery of basal metabolic rate.

Weight loss should be based on a scientific diet and reasonable exercise, and excessive reliance on topical methods may mask real weight problems. It is recommended to develop personalized weight loss plans through the evaluation of nutritionists and avoid the use of Chinese herbal products with unknown ingredients. Low glycemic index diet combined with aerobic exercise can be adopted in daily life, and 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise can be maintained every week to gradually improve body fat percentage. If there is skin damage or systemic discomfort, stop using the medication immediately and seek medical attention.
