The weight loss benefits of metformin

Metformin is generally not used as a weight loss medication, as its main function is to control blood sugar. Metformin is a commonly used drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It can reduce blood sugar by inhibiting liver glycogen output, improving insulin sensitivity and other mechanisms. Some patients may experience weight loss in the early stages of medication, but this phenomenon is related to individual metabolic differences and not directly affected by the drug.

The weight loss effect of metformin is mainly seen in obese diabetes patients with insulin resistance. This drug can reduce visceral fat accumulation and improve metabolic syndrome related indicators. For simple obese people, if there is no problem of diabetes or insulin resistance, the weight loss effect of metformin is limited. Long term use may cause adverse reactions such as gastrointestinal discomfort and vitamin B12 deficiency. There are risks associated with using metformin for weight loss in healthy individuals. This drug has not been approved for weight loss indications, and misuse may lead to serious complications such as lactic acidosis. Some medical institutions require strict monitoring of liver and kidney function as well as electrolyte levels when using metformin for weight management beyond the instructions. Pregnant women, alcoholics, and patients with severe liver and kidney diseases are prohibited from using this medication.

It is recommended to control weight through scientific diet and exercise. Maintain moderate aerobic exercise daily, such as brisk walking or swimming, combined with a high protein, low glycemic index diet. If there is pathological obesity or metabolic abnormalities, individualized plans should be developed after medical evaluation. Avoid taking hypoglycemic drugs on your own to intervene in weight, and use medication in a standardized manner under the guidance of a doctor.
