Drooling during sleep in pregnant women is usually a normal phenomenon, which may be related to hormone changes, improper sleeping posture, acid reflux, and other factors. If accompanied by symptoms such as angular inflammation and oral ulcers, be alert to pathological causes. Elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can stimulate increased salivary gland secretion, especially in early and late pregnancy. An enlarged uterus may compress the stomach, causing acid reflux and stimulating excessive saliva production in the mouth. When sleeping on the side, facial muscles may relax, which may also cause temporary outflow. Drooling caused by these physiological reasons usually does not require special treatment and can be alleviated by adjusting the angle of the high pillow and avoiding eating two hours before bedtime.
In rare cases, oral infections, neurological disorders, or digestive system issues may need to be considered. Candida infection can cause congestion and swelling of the oral mucosa, as well as abnormal saliva secretion. If diabetes is not well controlled during pregnancy, it may cause peripheral neuropathy and affect swallowing function. When gastroesophageal reflux disease is severe, lying flat at night can easily induce acid reflux and stimulate saliva secretion. This type of situation requires timely medical examination and screening to avoid affecting the health of mother and baby.
It is recommended that pregnant women choose a left lateral position and use a maternity pillow to support their waist and back, maintain oral hygiene, and rinse their mouth with light salt water after meals. Eat small meals frequently and avoid spicy and stimulating foods. If drooling continues to worsen or is accompanied by other discomforts, professional examinations should be conducted in obstetrics or dentistry to rule out the possibility of pregnancy complications. Daily facial muscle massage can promote blood circulation and help improve symptoms.
