How to relieve the spiciness of white radish

Spicy white radish is usually caused by skin irritation due to contact with mustard oil in radish, which can be relieved by rinsing, cold compress, and applying weak alkaline substances.

1. Rinse

Immediately rinse the contact area with plenty of flowing water and continue rinsing for more than 10 minutes. Water flow can effectively dilute and wash away irritating substances remaining on the surface of the skin, reducing the burning sensation. Avoid using hot water, as high temperatures may dilate pores and worsen discomfort. If you wear rings or other accessories on your hands, you need to remove them first and rinse them to prevent chemical residue.

2. Cold compress

Wrap ice cubes in a clean towel or a refrigerated wet towel and apply cold compress to the affected area for 15 minutes. Low temperature can shrink capillaries, alleviate local redness, swelling, and burning sensation. When applying cold compress, be careful to avoid direct skin contact with ice cubes to prevent frostbite. Cold compress can be repeated every hour until the symptoms are significantly relieved.

3. Weak alkaline treatment

Mix baking soda and water in a ratio of 1:3 to form a paste and apply it to the skin. Let it stand for 5 minutes and then rinse off. Mustard oil is weakly acidic, and weakly alkaline substances can neutralize its irritant properties. You can also use soapy water to gently scrub, but it is prohibited when the skin is damaged. After treatment, apply moisturizing cream to repair the skin barrier.

4. Dissolve Edible Oil

Take a small amount of vegetable oil from the kitchen and apply it to the affected area. Gently massage for 2 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. Oil can dissolve residual fat soluble irritants and reduce skin absorption. Olive oil, peanut oil, and other oils can be used, but those with allergies need to undergo small-scale testing first. Avoid using degreasing products such as dishwashing detergent immediately after processing.

5. Medication intervention

If there is obvious redness, swelling or blisters, weak acting hormone ointments such as mometasone furoate cream and hydrocortisone butyrate cream can be used according to medical advice for anti-inflammatory purposes. When itching is severe, oral loratadine tablets can be taken to alleviate symptoms. Mopirocin ointment should be used to prevent infection at the site of skin rupture. All medications should be used for no more than 3 days, and if symptoms do not improve, medical attention is required.

It is recommended to wear kitchen gloves when handling white radish, especially for those with hand eczema or sensitive skin. Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching other sensitive areas after contact. Daily consumption of citrus fruits rich in vitamin C and nuts rich in vitamin E can help enhance skin resistance. If there are systemic allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing and facial swelling, seek medical attention immediately. Before storing white radish, the roots can be cut off to reduce the probability of juice leakage.
