How to peel pomegranate quickly

The key to quickly peeling pomegranate lies in breaking the structure of the skin and using the buoyancy of water to separate the fruit grains. There are mainly five efficient methods: knife cutting, tapping, water peeling, spoon scraping, and kneading.

1. Knife cutting method

Cut the top of the pomegranate horizontally to a thickness of about 1 centimeter, cut the skin longitudinally along the white fascia pattern to the bottom, and gently break it into petal shapes by hand. This method can fully preserve the shape of the fruit grains and is suitable for scenarios where a tray needs to be placed. When operating, pay attention to keeping the blade parallel to the fascia to avoid shredding the fruit grains.

2. Beating Method

Use a knife to cut shallow marks around the waist of the pomegranate, then hold both ends of the pomegranate with both hands and squeeze inward, while tapping the skin with a spoon or rolling pin. The impact force will cause the fruit grains to separate from the inner membrane. After tapping for 20 seconds, invert the pomegranate and shake off the fruit grains. This method is highly efficient but may cause damage to some fruit grains.

3. Water peeling method

Soak the sliced pomegranate in a water basin, peel off the skin underwater, and rub the inner membrane with your hands. The buoyancy of water can reduce the impact force of fruit grains, and at the same time, the sunken fruit peel naturally separates from the floating fruit grains. This method is the cleanest and has high fruit integrity, making it particularly suitable for children to handle before consumption.

4. Spoon Scraping Method

After cutting the pomegranate in half, use a stainless steel spoon with a convex surface to scrape along the inner wall of the fruit peel in an arc shape. The curvature of the spoon edge can fit the internal structure of the pomegranate, causing the fruit to peel off in pieces. Choosing a soup spoon with a smooth surface can reduce fruit breakage, and this method is suitable for handling small amounts.

5. Rubbing Method

Roll and knead uncut pomegranates repeatedly on the table for 2 minutes, soften the internal connecting tissues, and then use the tip of the knife to make a small hole at the navel of the fruit. Gently squeeze on top of the container to release the juice and intact fruit pieces. This method is suitable for making pomegranate drinks, but the fruit integrity rate is relatively low.

When choosing pomegranates, priority should be given to mature fruits with yellowed and ribbed skin, as the fascia of these pomegranates is more fragile and easy to peel off. It is recommended to wash the fruit peel with salt to kill bacteria before using all methods, and store the processed fruit pieces in refrigeration for no more than 3 days. For people who need to control sugar intake, such as diabetes, it is recommended that pomegranate seeds be packaged and frozen for preservation, which can not only extend the shelf life but also reduce the rate of sugar increase. If you need to preserve nutrients to the greatest extent possible, it is recommended to use the water stripping method with ceramic cutting tools to reduce the oxidation of vitamin C by metal ions.
