How to make potatoes sprout quickly

The germination speed of potatoes can be accelerated by controlling temperature, humidity, light, and selecting specific varieties. The main methods include selecting high activity sweet potatoes, maintaining a moist environment, providing scattered light, appropriately increasing the ambient temperature, and soaking in gibberellin solution.

1. Selecting healthy seed potatoes with full and unfrozen bud eyes can significantly improve germination rate. Fresh potatoes with shorter storage time contain more endogenous hormones, and seed potatoes with no mechanical damage to the skin can reduce the probability of decay. Avoid using old potatoes that have turned green on the surface or have partially sprouted, as these potatoes may carry pathogens.

2. Moist Environment

Placing seed potatoes in a high humidity environment can promote bud germination. You can cover the seed potatoes with damp gauze or coconut coir to maintain a substrate moisture content of around 60%. Be careful to avoid water accumulation causing decay, regularly ventilate and check the humidity status twice a day in high temperature and high humidity environments.

3. Scattered Light

Potatoes require 6-8 hours of soft light per day during germination. You can place the sweet potatoes on the east facing windowsill or use a plant fill light, with a light intensity controlled between 5000-10000 lux. Dark environments can delay germination, but direct exposure to strong light can cause lignification of the skin, requiring a sunshade net to filter out some ultraviolet rays.

4. Temperature regulation

Maintaining an ambient temperature of 15-20 ℃ is most conducive to bud differentiation. In winter, a heating pad can be used to maintain a constant temperature, and in summer, it is necessary to avoid exceeding 25 ℃ to prevent hibernation. Temperature fluctuations can inhibit germination, and it is recommended to control the temperature difference between day and night within 5 ℃. Constant temperature places such as cellars are ideal choices.

5. Gibberellin treatment

Soaking seed potatoes in 0.5-1ppm gibberellin solution for 10 minutes can break dormancy. This plant growth regulator can activate amylase activity and promote cell division. The processed sweet potatoes need to be dried for surface moisture before cultivation, and should not be mixed with fungicides. Protective gloves should be worn during operation.

During the sprouting process of potatoes, it is necessary to regularly check for mold growth. If diseased potatoes are found, they should be immediately isolated. It is recommended to use ceramic pots or wooden boxes with good breathability for cultivation containers, and pad the bottom with 2cm coarse sand to enhance drainage. Potatoes that have sprouted should be transplanted into loose soil as soon as possible, as continued hydroponic cultivation can lead to malnutrition of the tubers. If you plan to consume sprouted potatoes, it is necessary to thoroughly remove the bud eyes and surrounding tissues, as solanine toxins are mainly enriched within 1 centimeter around the bud body. Sprouted potatoes for cultivation can retain 2-3 robust bud points, while the remaining buds should be manually removed to concentrate nutrient supply.
