The hardening of leather bags can be restored to softness through appropriate care methods, including using leather care oil, applying hand cream, steam softening, filling and shaping with newspapers, and natural kneading.
1. Leather care oil
is a care oil specifically designed for leather maintenance that can penetrate fiber gaps and replenish natural oils lost from the leather. Choose products containing mink oil, lanolin, and other ingredients, dip a small amount with a soft cloth and evenly wipe the surface in a circular motion. After letting it sit and absorb, the leather will gradually regain its elasticity. Be careful to avoid excessive use that may cause oil residue. After care, use a clean cotton cloth to gently wipe the surface.
2. Hand cream softening
Hand cream containing moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin and shea butter can be used as a temporary substitute. Take a paste the size of a soybean and rub it evenly in the palm of your hand. Gently apply it to the hardened area of the bag, and use oil to moisturize and loosen the leather fibers. This method is suitable for small-scale emergency response, and long-term use may affect leather color due to differences in composition.
3. Steam softening
Wrap a towel with a hot water bag and gently press the hard skin area, or keep a distance of 20 centimeters and fumigate with a steam steamer. Warm and humid air can stretch the collagen fibers. After processing, it is necessary to immediately use a dry cloth to absorb moisture, and at the same time, repeatedly press and shape with the palm to prevent further hardening after cooling. Use this method with caution for special materials such as suede.
4. Newspaper filling and shaping
Insert the crumpled newspaper tightly into the bag until it is fully stretched out, and place it in a ventilated place for 2-3 days. Paper absorbs environmental moisture while exerting uniform pressure on the cortex, which helps to eliminate local stiffness. When filling, attention should be paid to the possibility of newspaper ink contaminating the light colored lining. It is recommended to wrap it in cotton cloth before use.
5. Natural Rubbing
Hold the bag with both hands and repeatedly bend and fold the hardened parts, promoting fiber flexibility through physical friction. It can be used in conjunction with a hair dryer to assist in softening at low temperatures. Sheepskin and other delicate materials need to be controlled in strength to avoid permanent creases on the surface. Touching and pressing frequently in daily use can also prevent cortical hardening.
During daily storage, avoid direct sunlight and high temperature environments, and regularly clean the surface dust with a cotton cloth. Long term unused bags can be filled with bubble wrap to maintain their shape and placed in breathable dust-proof bags. If there is still no improvement after trying the above methods, it is recommended to consult a professional leather repair institution to avoid irreversible damage caused by the use of strong chemical agents on your own. The genuine leather material will naturally form unique textures over time, and moderate softness can better reflect the beauty of leather.
