How to lose weight for obese children

Childhood obesity can be controlled through adjusting dietary structure, increasing exercise, behavioral intervention, psychological counseling, medical intervention, and other methods. Childhood obesity may be related to genetic factors, improper diet, lack of exercise, endocrine disorders, medication factors, and other reasons.

1. Adjust dietary structure

Control daily total calorie intake and reduce high sugar and high-fat foods such as fried foods, sweet drinks, etc. Increase the intake ratio of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and high-quality protein. It is recommended to use low oil cooking methods such as steaming and boiling. Parents need to help their children establish regular and quantitative eating habits to avoid overeating.

2. Increase exercise volume

Ensure at least 60 minutes of moderate to high-intensity physical activity per day, such as brisk walking, swimming, skipping rope, and other aerobic exercises, which can be combined with resistance training to enhance muscle mass. Parents should accompany their children to participate in sports, reduce sitting time, and avoid using electronic devices continuously for more than 1 hour.

3. Behavioral Intervention

Record daily diet and exercise, and set phased weight loss goals. Strengthen healthy behavior through reward mechanisms, such as replacing snack rewards with non food rewards. Parents need to create a healthy lifestyle that involves the whole family and avoid imposing dietary restrictions solely on children.

4. Psychological counseling

Obese children may develop feelings of inferiority due to their physical problems. Parents should avoid criticism and blame, and help their children establish physical confidence through active communication. If necessary, seek professional psychological counseling to prevent emotional eating caused by weight loss stress.

5. Medical Intervention

For children with moderate to severe obesity or concomitant metabolic abnormalities, individualized plans should be developed under the guidance of a doctor. It may involve endocrine examination, medication treatment (such as Orlistat capsules), or multidisciplinary joint management. Do not use weight loss drugs or extreme dieting methods on your own.

Weight loss in children should be based on the premise of not affecting growth and development, and it is advisable to lose no more than 0.5 kilograms of weight per month. Parents should regularly monitor their children's height and weight changes, ensure 8-10 hours of sleep per day, and avoid eating at night. It is recommended to undergo a physical examination and evaluation every 3 months. If any discomfort symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue occur, seek medical attention promptly. During the weight loss process, it is important to focus on cultivating long-term healthy habits rather than short-term rapid weight loss.
