How to deal with mold on the wall

Mold spots on walls can usually be treated through cleaning, dehumidification, repair, prevention, and disinfection. Mold spots are mainly caused by factors such as humid environment, poor ventilation, wall water seepage, low temperature, and the growth of mold spores.

1. Clean

Use diluted bleach or specialized mold remover to wipe away mold spots, avoiding direct contact with mold by hand. Maintain ventilation during cleaning to prevent inhalation of fungal spores. Stubborn mold spots can be soaked in baking soda solution or white vinegar and brushed off. After completion, wipe the residue with clean water.

2. Dehumidification

Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to reduce indoor humidity and maintain relative humidity below 60%. During humid seasons, quicklime or bamboo charcoal bags can be placed in corners to absorb moisture, and dehumidification bags can be hung in enclosed spaces such as wardrobes. Regularly check whether the water pipes are leaking and promptly repair the leakage points.

3. To repair severely moldy wall coverings, remove them to the base layer and reapply with anti mold putty. Before repairing, ensure that the wall is completely dry and use moisture-proof primer if necessary. Mold can be removed from the gaps of ceramic tiles, and then anti mold grout can be applied.

4. Prevention

Improve indoor ventilation by opening windows for at least 30 minutes every day. Maintain a distance of at least 5 centimeters between furniture and walls to avoid creating damp blind spots. When renovating, you can choose to add anti mold coatings, and use waterproof and anti mold materials in areas such as bathrooms.

5. After disinfection

treatment, irradiate the moldy area with ultraviolet light to kill residual spores, or spray medical grade disinfectant. Wear a mask and gloves during disinfection, and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Food grade anti mold spray is recommended for sensitive areas such as children's room.

Long term humid environment may cause respiratory diseases. It is recommended to continuously monitor the condition of the wall after dealing with mold. Maintain indoor dryness and ventilation on a daily basis, regularly inspect hidden corners, and promptly deal with mold spots found. Serious mold growth or repeated outbreaks require professional personnel to inspect the wall structure and eliminate fundamental issues such as water seepage. In winter, an electric heater can be used to raise the room temperature, and in summer, excessive temperature difference between indoors and outdoors can be avoided, which can cause condensation. Choose environmentally friendly materials with good breathability during decoration to fundamentally reduce the risk of mold growth.
