How to deal with damp and moldy walls

Wall moisture and mold can be treated through ventilation and dehumidification, cleaning and disinfection, repairing leaks, using anti mold coatings, professional mold removal services, and other methods. The return of moisture and mold is usually caused by factors such as humid environment, wall water seepage, insufficient insulation, poor ventilation, and mold growth.

1. Ventilation and dehumidification

Maintaining indoor air circulation is a fundamental measure to prevent and alleviate wall moisture and mold. Open windows daily for ventilation, especially in seasons with high humidity, and use dehumidifiers or air conditioners to reduce indoor moisture. Avoid drying clothes indoors and reduce the number of green plants placed to control environmental humidity within a reasonable range.

2. Cleaning and Disinfection

For moldy walls, first wipe the surface mold with a dry cloth, and then thoroughly clean it with diluted bleach or specialized mold remover. Wear gloves and a mask during operation to avoid inhaling fungal spores. After cleaning, keep the wall dry and repeat disinfection if necessary.

3. Repair Leakage

Check whether there are pipeline leaks or external wall cracks on the wall, which are common causes of water infiltration. Repair waterproof layers in areas prone to water seepage such as bathrooms and kitchens, and fill cracks in exterior walls with waterproof materials. Only by addressing the fundamental issue of water seepage can we effectively prevent the repeated growth of mold. 4. After being treated with anti mold coating, the wall surface can be coated with latex paint or diatomaceous earth that has anti mold function. These materials contain antibacterial ingredients and have good breathability. Ensure that the base layer is completely dry before construction, and increase the number of coats at the corners. Anti mold coating can form a protective layer, reducing the probability of mold growth in the later stage.

5. Professional Services

For cases of large areas of stubborn mold or recurrent mold, it is recommended to contact a professional mold removal company. They use deep cleaning technologies such as high-pressure steam and ozone treatment, and can detect hidden mold. If necessary, wall drying equipment can be used to ensure thorough removal of mold.

Regularly inspect damp areas such as corners and window frames, and promptly deal with mold spots found. Maintain indoor humidity below 60% and keep ventilation gaps between furniture and walls. Severe mold growth may release harmful spores. Proper protection should be taken during handling, and pregnant women and those with sensitive respiratory systems should avoid contact. If mold growth is accompanied by structural problems with the wall, building defects need to be addressed simultaneously in order to be cured.
