How to clean up Peach Owl

Peach owl generally refers to fruit boring pests on peach trees, which can be cleaned up through manual removal, biological control, chemical control, physical control, agricultural control, and other methods. Peach owl larvae can eat fruits, leading to fruit drop or quality decline, and appropriate methods should be selected according to the degree of pest infestation.

1. Manual removal

When peach owl fruit is found to be rotten, the affected fruit should be promptly removed and destroyed to reduce the spread of the insect source. Manual removal is suitable for early or small-scale pest infestations, and regular inspections of fruit trees are necessary, especially paying attention to whether there are insect holes or brown feces in the calyx of the fruit. The removed insect fruits should be buried deep or burned to avoid the harm of larvae transfer.

2. Biological Control

Use natural enemies of peach owls such as red eye wasps and ladybugs for control, or spray biological agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis. Red eyed wasps can lay their eggs inside peach owl eggs, preventing them from hatching. Releasing tens of thousands of bees per acre can effectively control the insect population density. Biological control is environmentally friendly, but it needs to be implemented in advance during the pest spawning period.

3. Chemical control

In case of serious insect damage, spray control with high efficiency and low toxicity pesticides such as chloramphenicol, methionine, etc. can be used. The pesticide should be used during the peak hatching period of larvae or when the fruit is first eaten, with a focus on spraying the fruit and surrounding branches and leaves. Avoid using pesticides in the short term before the fruit matures to prevent pesticide residues. Pesticides with different mechanisms of action can be rotated to delay drug resistance.

4. Physical control

Hanging frequency vibration insecticidal lamps or sugar and vinegar solution to trap adult insects, reducing the probability of mating and reproduction. Setting insecticidal lamps per hectare of orchard can interfere with the nighttime activities of adult insects. The sugar and vinegar solution is prepared according to the ratio of alcohol to sugar and vinegar, and hung around the outer edge of the tree crown to lure and kill. Physical methods need to be combined with other prevention and control measures to have a significant effect on the peak period of adult insects.

5. Agricultural Prevention and Control

Scrape off the old bark during winter cleaning to eliminate overwintering pupae, and plow the soil in spring to damage the pupa chamber. Reasonable pruning ensures ventilation and transparency of the tree crown, avoiding dense planting and creating a humid environment. Choose insect resistant varieties and avoid intercropping with host plants such as pear trees. Fruit bagging can prevent adult insects from laying eggs. The prevention and control of peach owl should adhere to the principle of prevention first and comprehensive control, and take corresponding measures at different growth stages. Pay attention to observing the condition of fruit trees in daily life, and prioritize artificial and biological methods when detecting pests in the early stages, with chemical control as a supplementary measure. Keep the orchard clean, promptly remove fallen fruits and weeds, balance fertilization to enhance tree vigor. Thoroughly clean the orchard after fruit harvesting to reduce the number of overwintering insect sources and lay the foundation for prevention and control in the coming year.
