Generally, hairy crabs can survive for 3-7 days when tied up, and the specific time is closely related to storage temperature, humidity, binding method, and the crab's own state. The survival time of bound hairy crabs is significantly affected by environmental temperature. Metabolism slows down and survival time is relatively prolonged in low-temperature environments. Place the bound hairy crabs in a refrigerated environment at 4-8 degrees Celsius, and cover the surface with a damp towel to maintain humidity, which can maintain vitality for a long time. Attention should be paid to avoiding direct contact with ice cubes during refrigeration to prevent frostbite. Checking the crab's body activity ability daily and observing the contraction response by lightly touching the eye stalk is a simple method to determine its survival status. Improper bundling can shorten survival time. Rough ropes may damage crab shells and cause bacterial infections, while tight binding can limit gill respiration. It is recommended to use specialized grass or cotton ropes with moderate elasticity to fix the crab and maintain its natural curled state. If there is an increase in mucus secretion or odor on the surface of the crab shell, it may have entered a dying state. Some vendors use ice water immersion for transportation, which can temporarily maintain vital signs but accelerate physical exertion, and the actual survival time may be shorter than dry storage.

It is recommended to consume as soon as possible after purchase to ensure freshness. For short-term storage, it can be placed in a cool place and kept moist. Before cooking, it is necessary to confirm that the crab body is intact and undamaged, and there should be obvious struggle reactions in the limbs of live crabs during cooking. Dead hairy crabs rapidly break down histidine in their bodies, producing harmful substances that cannot be continued to be consumed. If extended storage is required, it can be steamed and frozen, but the flavor and taste may decrease.
