How long can vegetables be soaked to remove pesticides

Soaking vegetables for 10-15 minutes can effectively reduce pesticide residues, and washing them with running water is more effective. The amount of pesticide residues is mainly affected by factors such as soaking time, water temperature, vegetable type, pesticide type, and cleaning method. When soaked in clean water, the wrinkled areas of leafy vegetables are prone to hiding pesticides. Extending the soaking time appropriately can help dissolve fat soluble pesticides. Controlling the water temperature at around 30 ℃ can improve the decomposition efficiency of some organic phosphorus pesticides, but high temperatures may damage the nutrition of vegetables. It is recommended to remove the outer layer of old leaves first, separate the vegetable leaves one by one, and soak them. During the process, gently stir to accelerate pesticide precipitation. Some highly permeable systemic pesticides may enter the interior of vegetable tissues, making it difficult to completely remove them by soaking alone. This type of pesticide is mostly used for eggplant and fruit crops, with a lower probability of use for leafy vegetables. When encountering vegetables with a thick wax layer, such as broccoli, soak them in light salt water to promote pesticide peeling, and then gently brush the surface depressions with a soft bristled brush. Choosing vegetables purchased through legitimate channels can reduce the risk of pesticide exceeding standards, and organic vegetables usually have lower pesticide residue levels. After cleaning, it is recommended to cook as soon as possible to avoid nutrient loss caused by prolonged storage. For special populations such as infants, young children, and pregnant women, baking soda water or fruit and vegetable cleaning agents can be used as auxiliary treatment, but it is necessary to ensure that they are rinsed thoroughly. If there are serious concerns about pesticide residues, you can choose to peel and consume or blanch to further reduce the risk.
