Does China have its own durian

There are currently a small number of locally grown durians in China, mainly distributed in tropical regions such as Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi, but the yield is low and the quality differs from imported durians. Hainan is the earliest province in China to introduce durian, relying on tropical climate conditions to cultivate durian varieties that are suitable for the local environment, such as Qingni and Jinzhen. These varieties have been domesticated for many years and can tolerate short-term low temperatures, but their fruit size is smaller and their sweetness and aroma are slightly inferior to Southeast Asian durians. The planting areas are concentrated in Sanya, Baoting and other places, adopting a refined management orchard model. The concentrated maturity period is from June to August every year, and some high-quality fruits can be purchased through e-commerce platforms. The cultivation of durian in Guangdong and Guangxi is still in the experimental stage, and due to the low temperature in winter, it is necessary to build insulated greenhouses to assist in overwintering, resulting in higher costs. In recent years, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan has also been experimenting with cold resistant varieties, but has not yet formed a large-scale yield. Domestic durians have low transportation losses and can be harvested from trees. Their taste is different from imported ripened durians, making them more suitable for consumers who prefer fresh flavors. The cultivation of durian requires strict requirements for accumulated temperature, humidity, and soil, and the suitable areas in China are limited. Consumers can pay attention to the place of origin label when making purchases. Durian produced in Hainan usually comes with geographical indication certification. It is recommended to pair it with tropical fruits such as mangosteen and lychee for daily consumption to balance dryness and heat. People with weak and cold constitution should control their single intake. In the future, with the improvement of variety improvement technology, the yield and quality of domestically produced durian are expected to be further optimized.
