Can senna leaves help with weight loss

Senna leaves cannot be used as a weight loss medication. Senna leaves mainly contain anthraquinone compounds that stimulate intestinal peristalsis to produce a laxative effect, which may cause a false impression of short-term weight loss. However, this weight loss is due to the loss of water and electrolytes, rather than the true reduction of fat. The active ingredients in senna can stimulate the colonic plexus, enhance intestinal peristalsis, and inhibit water and sodium absorption, leading to diarrhea like bowel movements. This process may cause a temporary decrease in body fat percentage, but the main loss is intestinal contents, extracellular fluid, and electrolytes. Long term abuse may damage the enteric nervous system, leading to colonic melanosis and drug dependence. Some patients may experience severe constipation rebound after discontinuation. Anthraquinone compounds can also cause adverse reactions such as abdominal pain and nausea, and high doses may lead to hypokalemia and arrhythmia. Clinical studies have shown that people who use laxatives for weight loss have no significant improvement in body fat percentage, and their basal metabolic rate may actually decrease due to electrolyte imbalances. The National Medical Products administration has classified health products containing senna leaves as functional category "improving constipation" rather than weight loss products. The Chinese Dietary Guidelines for Residents emphasize that healthy weight loss relies on a reasonable diet and regular exercise, and recommend losing 0.5-1 kilogram per week. For people with difficulty in defecation, the daily intake of dietary fiber can be increased to 25-30 grams, preferably using natural ingredients such as oats and broccoli, combined with 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per day. When pathological obesity exists, one should seek medical attention from an endocrinology department to investigate secondary factors such as polycystic ovary syndrome and hypothyroidism, and develop personalized plans under the guidance of a doctor.
