Can seaweed still be eaten after soaking for 6 days

Seaweed soaked for 6 days is generally not recommended for consumption. Long term soaking can lead to nutrient loss and texture deterioration of kelp, and may also breed bacteria or produce harmful substances. Kelp belongs to algae food, which is rich in iodine, dietary fiber, and minerals. After soaking fresh or dried kelp in clean water, the cell structure will gradually absorb water and expand, but soaking for more than 24 hours will cause a large amount of water-soluble vitamins to dissolve into the water. The components such as alginate on the surface of kelp may decompose after prolonged soaking, resulting in a soft and rotten texture and loss of elasticity. Soaking at room temperature is more conducive to the growth of microorganisms, and the proteins and carbohydrates in kelp provide conditions for bacterial reproduction.

In special circumstances, if kelp is placed in the refrigerator for refrigeration and soaking, and the water is changed multiple times during the process, the container is strictly disinfected, and after 6 days of observation, there is no mucus or odor, or it can be consumed with caution. But if the surface of kelp appears smooth, dark in color, or emits a sour odor, it indicates that it has deteriorated. Some people may experience gastrointestinal discomfort symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea when consuming spoiled seaweed, especially those with weak digestive function who need to pay special attention.

It is recommended to soak dried seaweed in cold water for no more than 12 hours, and change the water 2-3 times during this period. After soaking, cook it as soon as possible. Can be paired with vinegar or lemon juice cold mix, acidic environment helps to inhibit bacteria. When storing, the water should be drained and sealed for refrigeration. If long-term storage is required, blanch and freeze. If symptoms of food poisoning such as bloating and vomiting occur, seek medical attention promptly.
