Can onion heads grow onions

Onion heads can be used to grow onions, which is one of the common methods for home onion cultivation. Onion head is the bulb part of onion, which contains growth points and can germinate and grow again under suitable conditions. When planting onion heads, it is necessary to choose healthy and plump individuals. After removing the dry outer layer, bury the roots downwards in loose and breathable soil to keep the soil moist but avoid water accumulation. The planting environment requires sufficient light and a temperature of 15-25 degrees Celsius is ideal. After about a week, new shoots can be seen sprouting. During the growth period, a small amount of organic fertilizer can be applied every two weeks to promote bulb enlargement. Pay attention to timely weeding and prevent common pests such as aphids. If the onion heads have become moldy or severely dehydrated, their germination ability will significantly decrease. Some onions that have undergone long-term refrigeration may have difficulty sprouting due to the disruption of their dormancy mechanism. During the planting process, it is also necessary to avoid planting onions continuously in the same plot, otherwise it may cause soil borne diseases and lead to reduced yield.

It is recommended to choose spring and autumn seasons for home onion planting. Spring planting can yield summer onions, while autumn planting can be harvested the following year after overwintering. After the leaves have naturally fallen during harvest, dig them out and let them dry for several days to facilitate storage. Fresh onions are rich in sulfur-containing compounds and quercetin, which have antioxidant properties. Moderate consumption can help promote digestion and enhance immunity. During the planting process, crops such as carrots can be planted in combination to reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases by utilizing the complementary effects between plants.
