Can nuts still be eaten if they get damp

If nuts are not moldy or have a strange odor after being damp, they can generally be consumed, but their taste will deteriorate and their nutritional value will decrease. Nut moisture may be caused by improper storage or high environmental humidity, and moldy nuts may produce harmful substances such as aflatoxins. After nuts become damp, their moisture content increases, making them prone to the growth of mold and bacteria. If the nut shows obvious mold spots, crackling or bitter taste, it indicates that it has gone bad. Moldy nuts may contain aflatoxins, and high-temperature cooking cannot completely destroy their toxicity. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or liver damage. Peanuts, walnuts, and other nuts with high oil content are more prone to mold and should be discarded when they become darker in color or when oil seeps out after being damp. Pregnant women, children, and immunocompromised individuals should avoid consuming any suspicious nuts.

For daily storage of nuts, it is recommended to use sealed cans or vacuum packaging and store them in a cool and dry place. Food desiccants can be added to extend the shelf life. Nuts can be stored refrigerated in summer or humid areas, but attention should be paid to sealing and preventing cross contamination. Moderate consumption of fresh nuts can help supplement high-quality protein and minerals. The recommended daily intake is a small handful to avoid excessive intake and increase calorie burden.
