Can metformin help with weight loss

Metformin may help with weight loss, but it is not a specific weight loss medication. Metformin is a commonly used drug to treat type 2 diabetes. Its weight loss effect is mainly related to improving insulin resistance, inhibiting liver sugar output, reducing appetite and other factors. The use of metformin for weight loss should strictly follow medical advice and should not be self administered. Metformin reduces blood glucose levels by improving insulin sensitivity and may also decrease fat synthesis. Some patients may experience reactions such as decreased appetite and gastrointestinal discomfort after taking medication, indirectly leading to weight loss. Clinical observation shows that diabetes patients who take metformin regularly for a long time may have slow weight loss, but the individual difference is large. For non diabetes patients, the weight loss effect of metformin lacks sufficient evidence to support, and there may be a risk of adverse reactions. Overweight or obese individuals should prioritize weight loss through scientific methods such as diet control and exercise, and if necessary, combine medication treatment under the guidance of a doctor.

When using metformin, attention should be paid to possible gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea and diarrhea, and long-term medication should be monitored for vitamin B12 levels. This medication is contraindicated during pregnancy, liver and kidney dysfunction, severe infections, and other conditions. It is recommended to regularly monitor weight changes during the weight loss process, in conjunction with a low calorie diet and at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. If there is a sudden drop in weight or persistent discomfort for unknown reasons, timely medical evaluation should be sought.
