Can I eat one moldy fruit in a box and others

When one fruit in a box is moldy, other fruits can usually be eaten if there are no mold spots and the flesh is intact. Moldy fruits may contaminate adjacent fruits due to the spread of fungal spores, and it is necessary to carefully inspect the skin and stem for any abnormalities.

Fungi spread inside fruits through hyphae, and there may be a risk of contamination even if it is not visible to the naked eye. Fruit mold is often caused by fungi such as Penicillium and Aspergillus, which produce toxins such as penicillin that are resistant to high temperatures and may penetrate into the flesh. If fruits stored in the same box are directly attached to moldy fruits or in a humid environment, the probability of contamination is higher. Suggest sealing and discarding moldy fruits separately to avoid touching other fruits. Some fruits with high hardness, such as apples and pears, can be consumed after removing the moldy area and two centimeters of surrounding flesh if the mold is only localized and the flesh is normal. Soft fruits such as strawberries and peaches have high moisture content and loose structure, and mold spreads quickly. Even if the surface is intact, it is not recommended to continue consuming them. Before storing fruits, thoroughly dry the surface moisture and place them in a ventilated and dry place to delay mold growth.

It is recommended to use breathable fresh-keeping boxes or paper bags when storing fruits in daily life to avoid the accumulation of water vapor caused by the sealing of plastic bags. Regularly checking the condition of fruits and promptly cleaning up spoiled individuals can reduce the risk of cross contamination. Before consumption, deeply remove the parts adjacent to moldy fruits. Children and immunocompromised individuals should avoid consuming products that may have been in contact with moldy fruits. If you experience discomfort such as abdominal pain and diarrhea after ingesting moldy fruits, seek medical attention promptly.
