Can blueberries still be eaten if they're not fresh

blueberries can generally be consumed if they are not moldy or rotten when they are not fresh, but it is not recommended to continue eating them if there is obvious spoilage. Blueberries that have gone bad may show signs of mold, softness, odor, or abnormal color, and should be carefully identified. When white mold spots or localized stickiness appear on the blueberry skin, it indicates the growth of mold, which can produce harmful substances such as penicillin. Even if the moldy part is removed, there may be a risk of toxin diffusion. If blueberries with slight wrinkling or softening of the skin do not produce any odor, it is usually due to water loss. Although their anthocyanin and vitamin C content may decrease, they can still be used to make jam or baked goods after removing the soft and rotten parts. If blueberries stored in refrigeration for more than a week have a fermented and alcoholic taste, it indicates that they have started to spoil and may cause gastrointestinal discomfort when consumed.

When purchasing, choose blueberries with full fruit and even white frost on the skin. It is recommended to use a breathable container wrapped in kitchen paper to absorb moisture and store for no more than 5 days. When cleaning, gently rinse with running water to avoid damaging the fruit powder. Blueberries that are temporarily not edible can be frozen and stored for making milkshakes. Elderly and immunocompromised individuals should avoid consuming any stale blueberries to prevent the risk of microbial infections.

For daily storage of blueberries, it is recommended to prioritize fruits that are not fully ripe. When stored at room temperature, avoid direct sunlight, and clean blueberries should be thoroughly dried before refrigeration. Separating blueberries from ethylene releasing fruits such as bananas and apples can delay spoilage, and making dried blueberries or jams is also an effective way to extend their shelf life. If symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea occur after consumption, seek medical attention promptly.
