Are liposuction and weight loss surgery the same thing

Liposuction and weight loss surgery are not the same thing. Liposuction is a cosmetic and plastic surgery mainly used to improve local fat accumulation; Weight loss surgery is a metabolic intervention aimed at pathological obesity, which achieves weight loss by reducing gastric capacity or altering digestive and absorption functions. Liposuction uses negative pressure suction technology to remove subcutaneous fat layer, which is suitable for people with normal weight but stubborn fat accumulation, such as the waist, abdomen, thighs, and other areas. This surgery does not change the number of fat cells, only reduces local fat volume, and cannot solve the problem of systemic obesity. Short term complications such as swelling and bruising may occur after surgery, and it is necessary to wear shapewear to help the skin retract. But liposuction has no significant effect on improving metabolic indicators such as blood sugar and blood lipids.

Weight loss surgery includes sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, etc., which change the anatomical structure of the gastrointestinal tract through medical means. This kind of surgery is applicable to severely obese patients with body mass index over 32.5 and metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Surgery can significantly reduce food intake and affect nutrient absorption, with long-term effects lasting for more than 5 years. But lifelong vitamin supplementation and regular monitoring of nutritional status are necessary, which may lead to serious complications such as dumping syndrome and anastomotic leakage. The choice between liposuction or weight loss surgery should be evaluated based on individual circumstances. Before liposuction, it is necessary to ensure stable weight and good skin elasticity. After surgery, a healthy diet should be maintained to prevent fat regeneration. Weight loss surgery requires multidisciplinary evaluation by endocrinology and nutrition departments, and a long-term follow-up mechanism needs to be established after surgery. Both types of surgeries must be performed by qualified physicians in formal medical institutions, and should not be blindly chosen solely for the purpose of weight loss.
