How to Peel off the Whole Walnut Kernel

To peel off a complete walnut kernel, it is necessary to master the correct techniques and tools, mainly including freezing, steaming, tapping, tool assisted, and warm water soaking methods.

1. Freezing method

Put walnuts in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator and freeze for about two hours. Low temperature will make the connection between the walnut shell and the kernel brittle. After removal, gently tap the walnut shell to make it easier for the kernels to fall off completely. This method is suitable for situations where a large amount of walnut kernels need to be peeled, and can effectively reduce kernel fragmentation.

2. Steaming Method

Put walnuts into a steamer and steam for five to eight minutes. The steam will soften the inner lining of the walnut shell. After steaming, rinse immediately with cold water. The thermal expansion and contraction will cause the shell and nuts to separate. This method can maintain the integrity of walnut kernels without affecting their nutritional content.

3. Knocking Method

Select the suture position of the walnut and gently tap it with a walnut clip or a small hammer. The force should be even and moderate, and when tapping, use your hands to secure the walnut to prevent it from rolling. This method requires a certain level of skill, and once proficient, it can quickly peel off the intact kernels, making it suitable for processing in small quantities.

4. Tool assisted method

Use a professional walnut clamp or nut pliers to secure the walnut in the groove of the tool. Slowly apply pressure to crack the shell, then use a pointed tool to pick out the intact nuts. This method requires high tools, but can maximize the protection of the kernel shape.

5. Warm water soaking method

Soak walnuts in warm water at around 50 degrees Celsius for half an hour, and the water will penetrate into the shell and soften the inner membrane. After removing it, wipe off the moisture and use a tool to pry open the shell to obtain the intact nuts. This method is easy to operate and suitable for small-scale processing in households.

When consuming walnuts in daily life, it is recommended to choose fresh walnuts of the current season. Varieties with a uniform and glossy shell color are easier to peel off intact kernels. Before processing, walnuts can be left to air dry in a well ventilated area for one or two days to reduce their moisture content. The peeled nuts should be sealed and stored to avoid moisture, and refrigeration can extend the shelf life. Walnuts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Moderate consumption is beneficial for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health, but it is recommended to limit the daily intake to 20-30 grams. For people with weak digestive function, walnut kernel can be added to Congee after grinding.
