How to choose bamboo with more meat

The selection of succulent mangosteen mainly depends on the color of the fruit stem, the hardness of the fruit shell, the number of fruit petals, and the weight of the fruit. The stem of fresh mangosteen is bright green, the shell is elastic when pressed, the number of petals is numerous and evenly distributed, and the heavy texture indicates full flesh.

1. Fruit Stem Color

The color of the bamboo stem can directly reflect the freshness level. The stem of high-quality mountain bamboo is emerald green, indicating a short harvesting time and proper storage. If the fruit stem turns yellow or black, it indicates that it has been stored for too long, and the internal flesh may become shriveled or spoiled. When selecting, gently open the fruit stem to observe. The stem section of fresh bamboo is moist and not dry.

2. Hardness of fruit shell

Gently press the outer shell of the mangosteen with your fingers. The fresh fruit shell is slightly elastic and can rebound, indicating a small gap between the shell and the flesh. If the shell is too hard, it may be immature, and if it is too soft, it may rot inside. The shell of mature mangosteen is deep purple red in color, with no depressions or mold spots on the surface. The shell is slightly moist but not sticky to the hand.

3. Number of fruit petals

The number of petal shaped sepals at the bottom of the bamboo corresponds to the number of internal flesh petals. The more sepals there are, the more petals there are in the flesh, and usually 6-8 petals of mangosteen flesh are fuller. When selecting, it is possible to observe whether the bottom sepals are intact and undamaged, and whether the evenly distributed mangosteen flesh is more fully developed.

4. Fruit weight

For bamboo of the same size, the heavier the hand feel, the more water the flesh has and the thinner the shell. You can weigh the mangosteen in your palm, and the heavy fruit usually has a high proportion of flesh. Overly light mangosteen may cause the flesh to shrink due to dehydration, or the shell may be too thick and squeeze the flesh space.

5. Appearance and Shape

High quality mangosteen is flattened and round in shape, with a symmetrical and undistorted fruit body. If one side of the fruit is significantly raised, it may be due to poor development leading to uneven distribution of the flesh. Bamboo with a smooth and scratch free surface has better freshness, while fruits with brown spots may have started to spoil.

It is recommended to refrigerate and store the mangosteen after purchase, and consume it within 2-3 days to maintain the best taste. Rinse the outer shell with clean water before consumption, and gently press along the center line of the shell to break it open. Mangkhut is cold in nature, and it is advisable to consume 3-5 servings per day. People with weak gastrointestinal function should reduce their intake. When the flesh appears transparent or fermented, it is not edible. With hot fruits such as durian, it can neutralize the cold, but diabetes patients need to pay attention to controlling the total sugar intake.
